The Liberian education system is in a state of emergency. It is suffering from a huge deficit caused by a devastating 14-year civil war that left many of its children and youth homeless and orphaned. In the midst of the rebuilding process, Liberia was hit by yet another catastrophe known as Ebola. This epidemic created a further spiral of Liberia’s already crippling educational system. Although the international world has tried to assist Liberia by providing aid and a number of educational programs, Liberia continues to lag behind majority of its African counterparts. Additionally, given the lack of qualified teachers, poor student attendance, infrastructure issues, quality of education, and the like, it’s no wonder the literacy rate in Liberia is as low as 47.6% for adults, 65% for males, and 57% for females.
